What changed for this spec
Blizzard's stated goal is to shift Fire's relative value from Combustion burst toward steady-state damage, so that time outside Combustion stays meaningful. All damage is increased by 19%, Pyroblast damage is increased by 15%, and Flamestrike damage is increased by 15%, while Fired Up is retuned in both directions: rank 1 now grants 2% increased Fire damage for 8 seconds (was 4% for 12 seconds), rank 2 now increases Fire damage by 5%/10% (was 3%/6%), and rank 3's chance to occur during Combustion has been slightly reduced. Pyroclasm duration is increased to 20 seconds (was 15 seconds). Outside the spec list, Improved Blazing Barrier is redesigned to add a barrier charge and heal 15% of the damage it absorbs, and the Sunfury hero tree's Rondurmancy and Ashes of Inspiration are both redesigned.

Not re-verified for Season 2. This ordering was checked for patch 12.0.7. Patch 12.1 raised max-level player health and creature damage by 25% and deliberately moved power out of cooldowns into steady-state damage, either of which can move secondary weights. Open question: no Season 2 sim source has been checked, so the order below is last season's and is shown unchanged rather than guessed at.
Stat priority and consumables
Item level and effect strength still matter. Use this ordering to break close choices, then re-check it after major gear swaps.
- 1.Intellect
- 2.Critical Strike
- 3.Haste
- 4.Versatility
- 5.Mastery
Intellect is your primary stat. Critical Strike is king because every filler and Fire Blast crit feeds Hot Streak. Haste speeds Ignite cadence during Combustion and smooths casts and GCDs between windows. Versatility and Mastery trail for pure throughput, though exact weights move with trinkets, crafted gear, and the hero tree, so sim your own character.
Flasks, food, potions, weapon oils, and runes for this build.
Priority order is from patch 12.0.7 and has not been re-derived for 12.1. Individual lines naming an ability that 12.1 removed or redesigned are annotated above; lines that 12.1 only retuned are unchanged, because a damage number moving does not by itself reorder a priority list.
Opener and priority
Use these as decision priorities, not a rigid cast sequence. Re-evaluate whenever targets, resources, procs, or mechanics change.
Core principles
- Convert and spend Hot Streak: critical strikes generate Heating Up and Hot Streak - spend them on Pyroblast (Flamestrike in AoE) and use Fire Blast to convert Heating Up into Hot Streak.
- Combustion is key: it makes every spell a guaranteed critical strike, supercharging Hot Streak generation. It can be activated while casting, so always trigger it at the end of a cast.
- Don't waste time: sitting on capped Fire Blast charges, or using them while Hot Streak is already up, is wasteful. Always be casting - idle time is the biggest damage loss Fire has.
SunfuryLonger Combustion window that summons an Arcane Phoenix and ends in Hyperthermia rapid-fire spenders. Replaces Pyroblast with Flamestrike at 4 or more targets.
Single-target priority
- 1.Combustion - activated during a hard-cast - during the window, alternate Pyroblast with Hot Streak against Fire Blast and Scorch builders, with Meteor in the last 8 seconds
- 2.Pyroblast - with Hot Streak
- 3.Pyroblast - with Hyperthermia
- 4.Fire Blast - if you have Heating Up while casting Fireball
- 5.Fire Blast - if you just spent Hot Streak and are guaranteed to crit - a Pyroblast in flight during Hyperthermia; in execute, while casting Scorch even without Heating Up, or whenever you have Heating Up
- 6.Scorch - with Heat Shimmer, after spending Hot Streak
- 7.Scorch - in execute - if the target is below 30% health
- 8.Fireball - filler
AoE priority
- 1.Meteor - right before Combustion
- 2.Combustion - during the window, alternate Flamestrike with Hot Streak against Fire Blast and Scorch builders
- 3.Flamestrike - with Hot Streak - Sunfury swaps Pyroblast for Flamestrike at 4+ targets
- 4.Flamestrike - with Hyperthermia
- 5.Fire Blast - if you have Heating Up while casting Fireball
- 6.Fire Blast - if you just spent Hot Streak and are guaranteed to crit - a Flamestrike in flight during Hyperthermia, or the execute conditions
- 7.Scorch - with Heat Shimmer, after spending Hot Streak
- 8.Scorch - in execute - if the target is below 30% health
- 9.Fireball - filler
Opener
- 1.Pre-cast a hard-cast Pyroblast before the pull.
- 2.Cast Fireball, use Fire Blast during the cast, then Pyroblast with Hot Streak twice (Double Pyroblast).
- 3.Alternate Fire Blast and Pyroblast until you run out of charges.
- 4.While the target is above 90% (Firestarter): Fireball, Fire Blast during the cast, another Fireball without Hot Streak, then Pyroblast with Hot Streak twice.
- 5.Entering Combustion: Pyroblast to spend your Hot Streak (in AoE, precast Meteor first).
- 6.Begin a Scorch cast, Fire Blast as soon as it begins, and hit Combustion right before the cast ends.
- 7.Cast Pyroblast (or Flamestrike in AoE) with Hot Streak twice, then continue with the priority.
FrostfireFrostfire Bolt replaces Fireball, and the Combustion window is shorter with no follow-up buffs. Replaces Pyroblast with Flamestrike at 4 or more targets.
Single-target priority
- 1.Combustion - activated during a hard-cast - during the window, alternate Pyroblast with Hot Streak against Fire Blast and Frostfire Bolt builders, with Meteor in the last 8 seconds
- 2.Fire Blast - in execute - on cooldown, ignoring Hot Streak
- 3.Frostfire Bolt - in execute - spam it regardless of Hot Streak, ignoring Pyroblast
- 4.Pyroblast - with Hot Streak
- 5.Fire Blast - if you have Heating Up while casting Frostfire Bolt
- 6.Fire Blast - if your Hot Streak Pyroblast just crit
- 7.Frostfire Bolt - filler
AoE priority
- 1.Meteor - on cooldown, unless Combustion will be up in the next couple of seconds - then hold it and cast right before activating Combustion
- 2.Combustion - during the window, alternate Flamestrike with Hot Streak against Fire Blast and Frostfire Bolt builders; Meteor only if it will hit during the window
- 3.Flamestrike - with Hot Streak - Frostfire swaps Pyroblast for Flamestrike at 4+ targets
- 4.Fire Blast - if you have Heating Up while casting Frostfire Bolt
- 5.Fire Blast - if your Hot Streak Flamestrike just returned Heating Up
- 6.Frostfire Bolt - filler
Opener
- 1.Pre-cast a hard-cast Pyroblast before the pull.
- 2.Cast Frostfire Bolt, use Fire Blast during the cast, then Pyroblast with Hot Streak twice (Double Pyroblast).
- 3.Alternate Fire Blast and Pyroblast until you run out of charges.
- 4.Until the target approaches 90% health: Pyroblast with Hot Streak, then Fire Blast with Heating Up, then Frostfire Bolt.
- 5.Entering Combustion: Pyroblast to spend your Hot Streak (in AoE, precast Meteor before the Frostfire Bolt cast, use Combustion during the GCD, and skip the Double Pyroblast).
- 6.Begin a Frostfire Bolt cast, Fire Blast as soon as it begins (if available), and hit Combustion right before the cast ends.
- 7.Cast Frostfire Bolt again if needed for Hot Streak, then Pyroblast (or Flamestrike in AoE) with Hot Streak twice and continue with the priority.
Pre-combat checks
- Cast Arcane Intellect on your group.
- Apply Blazing Barrier for the absorb shield.
- Optional: use Mirror Image right before combat to help your tank establish threat.
Major cooldowns
Combustion
- All spells critically strike during Combustion, making you a Hot Streak machine gun - alternate spenders with Fire Blast and filler builders.
- Always hard-cast into Combustion and activate it before the cast completes: Pyroblast/Flamestrike with Pyroclasm, Frostfire Bolt (Frostfire), Scorch (Sunfury), or Fireball.
- With Firestarter, delay Combustion until the target hits 90% health (about 18 seconds); without it, still delay about 8-10 seconds into the pull to pre-stack Fired Up while Fire Blast charges are plentiful.
- After the opener, use it on cooldown. Only delay for damage amps, AoE overlaps, or to dodge forced downtime - and plan ahead so the delay never costs you a use.
- Fired Up procs extend Combustion, and your first 3 procs inside the window are almost guaranteed; Fiery Rush speeds up Fire Blast recharge during it.
- When Combustion ends, Burnout makes every target with an active Ignite take extra damage scaled to the Ignite's size - in single target, land Meteor within 10 seconds of Combustion ending (aim for under 8 to be safe).
- Sunfury: the window is longer, summons an Arcane Phoenix, and ends with Hyperthermia - free, guaranteed-crit, ramping Pyroblast/Flamestrike casts plus Ashes of Inspiration haste. Frostfire: shorter window, no follow-up buffs.
Meteor
- A minor cooldown used almost entirely in tandem with Combustion: in the last 8 seconds of the window in single target, or right before activating Combustion in AoE.
- In Frostfire AoE, cast it on cooldown unless Combustion is only a couple of seconds away.
Advanced tips
Double Pyroblast and Finding Your Rhythm
- When a Fireball (or other cast) completes and is chased by an instant Pyroblast, both land at once - if both crit, you skip Heating Up and go straight to another Hot Streak. Firestarter and Combustion make the crits guaranteed.
- The spells' travel time hides inside the global cooldown, so no time is lost waiting for hits.
- Requirements: you are guaranteed to crit, you are casting a Hot Streak generator (Fireball, Scorch, Frostfire Bolt), you have Hot Streak in hand before the cast completes, and you queue the spender as the cast completes.
- The basic drill: cast Fireball, Fire Blast midway through the cast, press Pyroblast as the Fireball finishes - and if both crit, press Pyroblast again.
Import strings were built for patch 12.0.7 and have NOT been re-verified for 12.1. Nobody authoritative publishes import strings, so none was rewritten here rather than invented. Patch 12.1 moved or removed talents in several trees, so a string may import a build that no longer exists. Check the listed key talents against the 12.1 changes above before importing.
Talents and hero trees
Use Frostfire for the single-target profile below and Sunfury when cleave or adds make its toolkit more valuable.

Start with the profile matching your content. Boss and dungeon tabs in the gear section show the exact loadout used for each ranked result. A build with no import string has not had one exported for this patch; the key talents below are the build.
Frostfire Raid Single-Target
Recommended single-target default. Frostfire Bolt replaces your filler, and Meltdown plus Thermal Conditioning keep Hot Streak generation dense between Combustions. Use it on burn fights like Midnight Falls and movement-heavy single-target like Chimaerus, where Scorch and instant procs cover transitions.

Recommended dungeon and multi-target build. Sunfury Execution and Time Twist reward chaining Flamestrike Hot Streaks into packed pulls, and Meteor plus Dragon's Breath round out the burst on route-sized packs.

Take Sunfury into sustained multi-target raid encounters - the two-boss cleave on Vaelgor & Ezzorak and the add waves on Lightblinded Vanguard both reward Flamestrike Hot Streaks over forcing single-target Pyroblasts.
Arena - Greater Pyroblast Setup (3v3)
Built around landing Greater Pyroblast behind crowd control and forcing defensives with Combustion. Ring of Fire and Dragon's Breath control the melee, Overpowered Barrier and Ice Wall buy casting room, and Glass Cannon is the damage flex when you are not the kill target. Editorial acquisition targets
Use these slot targets when planning drops and crafted pieces. The encounter explorer above remains the source for the exact gear worn by each ranked player.
Season 1 acquisition targets, not re-verified for Season 2. The rows below name Season 1 items at their Season 1 item levels and are accurate as that; they are not Season 2 recommendations. Season 2's raid is The Venomous Abyss (8 bosses, Nek'zali the Soulcoiler through Ula'tek). Confirmed Season 2 raid item levels run 279 (Raid Finder, first boss) to 344 (Mythic, last two bosses and Very Rare drops), with Normal 292-302, Heroic 305-315 and the Great Vault paying 292/305/318/334 by difficulty. Open question: per-slot best-in-slot for Season 2 needs a sim source, and none was reachable.

Season 1 acquisition targets, not re-verified for Season 2. The dungeons named below are the Season 1 pool and are not in Season 2 rotation. Season 2 runs Altar of Fangs (new in 12.1), Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, Temple of Sethraliss, Kings' Rest and Ruby Life Pools. Confirmed Season 2 keystone item levels: +2 through +3 pay 295 end-of-run and 305 in the vault, rising to 311 end-of-run and 318 in the vault at +10 and above. Enchants
Choose enhancements after your equipment is settled. Secondary-stat enchant choices move with your current stat mix and the content you are preparing for.
Gems
Socket into the current stat priority, then re-check after major equipment swaps rather than treating a gem choice as permanent.
Embellishments
Crafted effects are capped at two equipped embellishments. Lock these in only after deciding which crafted slots survive your next raid or Mythic+ upgrades.
Utility, defensives, and movement
Your Mage toolkit is part of the rotation whenever it prevents lost uptime, lethal damage, or an enemy cast.
Time Warp is a solo Bloodlust; Ice Block is a full immunity that also clears a lethal cast.

What improves results
- Save Fire Blast charges for Combustion to guarantee Hot Streaks
- Hard-casting Pyroblast is correct now - pre-cast it into the pull and hard-cast into Combustion
- Begin a hard-cast and hit Combustion right before the cast ends
- Land Meteor within 10 seconds of Combustion ending so Burnout hits a large Ignite
- Polymorph breaks on any damage - keep your DoTs, pet, and AoE off a sheeped target or it pops instantly, and re-cast just before it fades to hold a target
Common mistakes
- Wasting Fire Blast outside Combustion
- Sitting on capped Fire Blast charges
- Entering Combustion without charges banked
- Letting a Hot Streak expire unused
FAQ
5 quick answersWhat is the best Fire Mage stat priority in Midnight Season 1?
Intellect first, then Critical Strike, Haste, Versatility, and Mastery. Crit is king because it feeds Hot Streak, and Haste speeds Ignite cadence during Combustion. Exact secondary weights still move with trinkets and crafted gear, so sim your own character.
Which Fire Mage hero tree should I play?
Frostfire for single-target - Frostfire Bolt, Meltdown, and Thermal Conditioning keep Hot Streak generation dense between Combustions. Sunfury for multi-target and Mythic+, where Sunfury Execution and Time Twist reward chaining Flamestrike into packs.
When should Hot Streak go into Flamestrike instead of Pyroblast?
Pyroblast is the default spender on one or two targets; switch Hot Streaks to Flamestrike at roughly three or more targets that will live through it. In raid, that means Flamestrike on the Lightblinded Vanguard add waves and Pyroblast on burn bosses like Midnight Falls.
How do I plan Combustion?
Pool Fire Blast charges before the window, line up your on-use trinket and combat potion, and open when the target will stand still long enough to spend everything. Do not press Combustion on cooldown into a phase transition or an untargetable boss.
How does Fire Mage survive hard pulls?
Keep Blazing Barrier active into predictable damage, use Alter Time before a hit rather than after it, and hold Ice Block for lethal mechanics. Greater Invisibility and Mirror Image cover threat and spike windows, and Counterspell plus Dragon's Breath stop dangerous casters before the damage happens.
