How Survival Hunter wins
Survival is the melee Hunter spec with real ranged reach through Aspect of the Eagle, Kill Command, and Wildfire Bomb. In Midnight it revolves around Focus, Tip of the Spear, Wildfire Bomb charges, Takedown, Boomstick, and spending empowered Raptor Strike/Raptor Swipe globals without capping resources.
- Role
- Melee DPS
- Stat lead
- Agility then Mastery
- Single target
- Pack Leader
- Cleave / AoE
- Pack Leader
Strong when
- Flexible melee profile with meaningful ranged uptime during Aspect of the Eagle
- Strong cleave baked into single-target builds through Boomstick and Wildfire Bomb
- Pack Leader dual-wield builds are straightforward and strong in both raid and Mythic+
- Excellent Hunter utility: Misdirection, Binding Shot, Tar Trap, Freezing Trap, Muzzle, Tranquilizing Shot, Roar of Sacrifice, and Aspect of the Turtle
Plan around
- Still loses value if melee uptime and pet uptime are sloppy
- Focus, Tip of the Spear, and Wildfire Bomb charge management all matter
- Cooldown cones and ground effects can miss if used while poorly positioned
- Jack-of-all-trades profile rarely hard dominates one damage pattern
What changed for this spec
Patch 12.1 reshapes Survival's talent tree rather than only retuning it. Flamefang Pitch and Shower of Blood are removed outright. Wildfire Imbuement has been redesigned so that throwing a Wildfire Bomb has a chance to imbue your weapon with flames, causing you and your pet's auto-attacks to deal additional Fire damage for 10 seconds. Grenade Juggler has been redesigned so that Boomstick increases the cooldown recovery rate of Wildfire Bomb by 60% for 8 seconds, and Grenade Juggler is now tracked in the Cooldown Manager. Two new talents arrive, Razor Edge and Bombardier, and Primal Surge has been moved up to an easier to access location in the talent tree. Retunes include Lunge, which now increases your Agility by 3% (was 2%) plus an additional 1% (was 2%) while dual-wielding, and Wildfire Shells, which now grants 3 seconds of Wildfire Bomb cooldown reduction (was 2 seconds). For Sentinel, Open Fire has been redesigned to increase Fire damage dealt by 5%; Lethal Barbs now gives auto-attacks a very high chance to generate 3 Focus rather than 1 Focus per auto-attack, and Blizzard says the previous version favored dual wielding the fastest attack speed weapons while the change should normalize Focus gain; Moon's Blessing now grants 6 seconds of Wildfire Bomb cooldown reduction when applying Sentinel's Mark (was 4 seconds); and Sentinel's Mark duration is increased to 16 seconds (was 12 seconds).
One thing on this page names an ability the patch changed
These are flagged, not corrected. Rewriting a priority list needs a source this page does not have, so what is shown is where the guide and the patch notes disagree.
- Flamefang Pitch (talents) The notes state under "The following talents have been removed:" that Flamefang Pitch is removed in 12.1, so this key talent no longer exists.

Not re-verified for Season 2. This ordering was checked for patch 12.0.7. Patch 12.1 raised max-level player health and creature damage by 25% and deliberately moved power out of cooldowns into steady-state damage, either of which can move secondary weights. Open question: no Season 2 sim source has been checked, so the order below is last season's and is shown unchanged rather than guessed at.
Stat priority and consumables
Item level and effect strength still matter. Use this ordering to break close choices, then re-check it after major gear swaps.
- 1.Agility
- 2.Mastery
- 3.Critical Strike
- 4.Haste
- 5.Versatility
Single-target is generally Agility > Mastery > Critical Strike = Haste > Versatility. In AoE, Haste moves ahead of Crit because it improves Focus flow, GCDs, Kill Command, Wildfire Bomb, and Butchery cadence. Sim exact items after weapon, trinket, tier, and embellishment changes.
Flasks, food, potions, weapon oils, and runes for this build.
Priority order is from patch 12.0.7 and has not been re-derived for 12.1. Individual lines naming an ability that 12.1 removed or redesigned are annotated above; lines that 12.1 only retuned are unchanged, because a damage number moving does not by itself reorder a priority list.
Opener and priority
Use these as decision priorities, not a rigid cast sequence. Re-evaluate whenever targets, resources, procs, or mechanics change.
Core principles
- Manage your resources: Kill Command is charge- and cooldown-limited and generates both Focus and Tip of the Spear, so use it as much as possible without over-capping either - with the optimal build that means two abilities between each Kill Command.
- Spend in a controlled way: maximize Raptor Strike uses without idling, because more Raptor Strikes mean more Raptor Swipes - spending too much or too little Focus both cost free damage.
- Respect your cooldowns: Wildfire Bomb and Boomstick are cooldown-limited, and a missed use cascades into lower damage for the rest of the encounter, especially in AoE.
Pack LeaderVery little mechanical RNG - you could do the exact same thing every pull, global to global. Plays around summoning Howl of the Pack Leader beasts and triggering Stampede out of Takedown.
Single-target priority
- 1.Hunter's Mark - if it is not yet active
- 2.Kill Command - whenever any Howl of the Pack Leader beast is available to summon, without wasting Tip of the Spear stacks
- 3.Takedown - first burn Tip of the Spear spenders (not generators) down the list below until you run out of stacks or Focus, then cast it
- 4.Wildfire Bomb - if you have a Tip of the Spear stack to spend
- 5.Boomstick - if you have a Tip of the Spear stack to spend
- 6.Raptor Swipe - if you have a Tip of the Spear stack to spend
- 7.Raptor Strike - with or without Tip of the Spear
- 8.Kill Command
AoE priority
- 1.Hunter's Mark - if it is not yet active
- 2.Kill Command - whenever any Howl of the Pack Leader beast is available to summon, without wasting Tip of the Spear stacks
- 3.Takedown - at 0 Tip of the Spear stacks to maximize Twin Fangs
- 4.Boomstick - if you have a Tip of the Spear stack to spend
- 5.Wildfire Bomb - if you have a Tip of the Spear stack to spend
- 6.Raptor Swipe - if you have a Tip of the Spear stack to spend
- 7.Raptor Strike - with or without Tip of the Spear
- 8.Kill Command
- 9.Takedown - fallback if you ran out of buttons or Focus and cannot manage a 0-stack cast
Opener
- 1.Pre-cast Hunter's Mark on the boss.
- 2.Pre-cast Wildfire Bomb about 1 GCD before the pull timer ends, standing far from the boss.
- 3.Cast Harpoon (or Disengage), Misdirection, and your combat potion together.
- 4.Cast Takedown, then Raptor Strike, then Kill Command.
- 5.Cast Boomstick, Wildfire Bomb, Wildfire Bomb.
- 6.Cast Kill Command, then Raptor Swipe.
- 7.Continue with the single-target priority.
SentinelSlightly less predictable thanks to random Sentinel's Mark procs, which can only come from spending Tip of the Spear (never from Kill Command). Moonlight Chakram replaces Takedown as a follow-up attack on the same keybind.
Single-target priority
- 1.Hunter's Mark - if it is not yet active
- 2.Kill Command - whenever you run out of Tip of the Spear stacks
- 3.Boomstick - with a Tip of the Spear stack, if the target is not affected by Sentinel's Mark
- 4.Wildfire Bomb - with a Tip of the Spear stack, if the target has Sentinel's Mark or the bomb is less than 4 seconds from fully recharging
- 5.Kill Command - once before entering Takedown, to maximize Tip of the Spear stacks
- 6.Takedown - if you have a Tip of the Spear stack to spend
- 7.Moonlight Chakram
- 8.Raptor Swipe - if you have a Tip of the Spear stack to spend
- 9.Raptor Strike - with or without Tip of the Spear
AoE priority
- 1.Hunter's Mark - if it is not yet active
- 2.Kill Command - whenever you run out of Tip of the Spear stacks
- 3.Boomstick
- 4.Wildfire Bomb - with a Tip of the Spear stack, whenever the target has Sentinel's Mark or the bomb is less than 6 seconds from recharging its second charge
- 5.Kill Command - once before entering Takedown, to maximize Tip of the Spear stacks
- 6.Takedown - if you have a Tip of the Spear stack to spend
- 7.Moonlight Chakram - if you have a Tip of the Spear stack to spend
- 8.Raptor Swipe - if you have a Tip of the Spear stack to spend
- 9.Raptor Strike - with or without Tip of the Spear
Opener
- 1.Pre-cast Hunter's Mark on the boss.
- 2.Pre-cast Wildfire Bomb about 1 GCD (~1.25 seconds) before the pull timer ends, standing far from the boss.
- 3.Cast Takedown and Harpoon together.
- 4.Cast Wildfire Bomb, then Boomstick, then Kill Command.
- 5.Cast Wildfire Bomb, then Moonlight Chakram.
- 6.Continue with the single-target priority - Lunar Calling gives the opener a predictable Sentinel's Mark proc; spend it efficiently to make room for new ones.
Pre-combat checks
- Summon a pet with a Pet Specialization suited for the content.
- Apply Hunter's Mark to the boss or strongest mob in a pack (+3% damage taken). With multiple Hunters, each should Mark a different target.
Major cooldowns
Takedown
- An extremely short damage cooldown that should always be buffed with Tip of the Spear. It also buffs your and your pets' damage by 20% - class abilities only, so trinkets and non-class procs gain nothing.
- Twin Fangs makes Takedown generate 3 Tip of the Spear stacks, so less of the short window is spent pressing Kill Command.
- Pack Leader: Stampede! makes your next Kill Command after Takedown trigger Stampede and the next Howl of the Pack Leader beast - Stampede aims based on your position relative to the target, so line up its narrow zone.
- Sentinel: Moonlight Chakram replaces Takedown's keybind as a powerful follow-up; with Stalk and Strike, delay Chakram until you can use its 10 seconds of Wildfire Bomb cooldown reduction, and Lunar Calling boosts Sentinel's Mark proc chance during Takedown.
Wildfire Bomb and Boomstick
- Both are cooldown-limited and fuel your AoE - a missed use cascades into later windows drifting, so watch the recharge bars.
- Both hit in cone or placement shapes: face and position them deliberately so they connect with as many enemies as possible.
- Sentinel: a single Wildfire Bomb can consume multiple Sentinel's Marks - keep the Marked target as the bomb's primary recipient to empower its primary-target bonus.
Advanced tips
Strike as One
- Despite being a passive talent, Strike as One is one of your most important damage sources - proc it as often as possible.
- Proccing it well means playing tightly around Focus management and Kill Command charges: never let charges sit capped and never drown yourself in unspent Focus.
Import strings were built for patch 12.0.7 and have NOT been re-verified for 12.1. Nobody authoritative publishes import strings, so none was rewritten here rather than invented. Patch 12.1 moved or removed talents in several trees, so a string may import a build that no longer exists. Check the listed key talents against the 12.1 changes above before importing.
Talents and hero trees
Use Pack Leader for the single-target profile below and Pack Leader when cleave or adds make its toolkit more valuable.
Recommended starting profiles
Single-target: Pack Leader
Pack Leader is the go-to Survival build in 12.0.7, especially with dual wield, and is recommended for single-target.
- Pack Leader hero tree
- Stat priority: Agility > Mastery
- Interrupt: Muzzle
Multi-target: Pack Leader
Pack Leader is also the recommended AoE build. Sentinel remains playable if you prefer Moonlight Chakram and Sentinel's Mark timing.

Editorial acquisition targets
Use these slot targets when planning drops and crafted pieces. The encounter explorer above remains the source for the exact gear worn by each ranked player.
Season 1 acquisition targets, not re-verified for Season 2. The rows below name Season 1 items at their Season 1 item levels and are accurate as that; they are not Season 2 recommendations. Season 2's raid is The Venomous Abyss (8 bosses, Nek'zali the Soulcoiler through Ula'tek). Confirmed Season 2 raid item levels run 279 (Raid Finder, first boss) to 344 (Mythic, last two bosses and Very Rare drops), with Normal 292-302, Heroic 305-315 and the Great Vault paying 292/305/318/334 by difficulty. Open question: per-slot best-in-slot for Season 2 needs a sim source, and none was reachable.
Raid acquisition targets
Season 1 acquisition targets, not re-verified for Season 2. The dungeons named below are the Season 1 pool and are not in Season 2 rotation. Season 2 runs Altar of Fangs (new in 12.1), Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, Temple of Sethraliss, Kings' Rest and Ruby Life Pools. Confirmed Season 2 keystone item levels: +2 through +3 pay 295 end-of-run and 305 in the vault, rising to 311 end-of-run and 318 in the vault at +10 and above. Open question: per-slot best-in-slot for Season 2 needs a sim source, and none was reachable.

Embellishments
Crafted effects are capped at two equipped embellishments. Lock these in only after deciding which crafted slots survive your next raid or Mythic+ upgrades.
Utility, defensives, and movement
Your Hunter toolkit is part of the rotation whenever it prevents lost uptime, lethal damage, or an enemy cast.

What improves results
- Think in two-GCD blocks between Kill Commands so you generate Tip of the Spear without wasting Focus.
- Use high-priority spenders with Tip of the Spear, but do not freeze your rotation waiting for perfect stacks.
- Do not cap Wildfire Bomb charges. Missed bomb cooldowns cascade into much lower damage.
- Boomstick is a cone. Face the pack and do not fire it into empty space.
- Aspect of the Eagle lets you keep dealing damage when melee is unsafe; plan it for downtime, not after you have already lost uptime.
- Use @cursor Freezing Trap and Tar Trap macros so your CC lands instantly.
- Roar of Sacrifice is now a real external for party/raid damage, but make sure the pet can survive the transfer.
Common mistakes
- Wildfire Bomb charge capping
- Focus or Tip of the Spear overcapping
- Using old Flanking Strike / Coordinated Assault / Kill Shot muscle memory
- Missing Boomstick or Flamefang Pitch because your facing/placement is wrong
- Spamming Kill Command so aggressively that the generated resources are wasted
- Holding Takedown until it no longer lines up with a real damage window
Talents by enemy class
Pick an opponent to see the pressure your PvP build must answer. The baseline comes from this spec's current arena build when one is published.
Grip setups, anti-caster pressure, and sustained melee uptime.
Mobility, anti-slow, and physical or magic mitigation.
Keep an answer for grip-based isolation and do not spend movement before the Death Knight commits their control chain.
