How Marksmanship Hunter wins
Marksmanship is a petless precision ranged spec built around Aimed Shot, Rapid Fire, Precise Shots, Trueshot, and either Dark Ranger's Black Arrow/Wailing Arrow loop or Sentinel's Sentinel's Mark/Moonlight Chakram tools.
- Role
- Ranged DPS
- Stat lead
- Weapon Damage then Agility
- Single target
- Dark Ranger
- Cleave / AoE
- Dark Ranger
Strong when
- High priority and burst damage through Aimed Shot, Rapid Fire, Trueshot, and Dark Ranger windows
- Strong cleave when Trick Shots, Volley, or Black Arrow spread are handled cleanly
- Long range and instant target swapping
- Can access pet-bound utility through talent choices without normally playing an active pet
Plan around
- More cast-locked than Beast Mastery
- Longer Aimed Shot cast time in Midnight punishes poor movement planning
- Rapid Fire can be clipped by sloppy queued casts without no-channeling macros
- Proc-heavy Dark Ranger windows can feel awkward if Black Arrow / Deathblow timing is missed
What changed for this spec
Explosive Shot is redesigned: every 1 second for 3 seconds the target explodes for Fire damage to enemies within 8 yards, and recasting it incorporates remaining damage from previous casts. Blizzard says it pivoted the design to find a stronger identity, and added Unstable Trigger, allowing a second use within 3 seconds. Headshot and Double Tap are removed. Deathblow now procs from Aimed Shot having a chance to make your next Aimed Shot grant the effect, which the notes say is to remove uncertainty about when to follow up with Kill Shot or Black Arrow; Rapid Fire's 100% chance is unchanged. Take Aim no longer makes Aimed Shot a guaranteed critical strike. Bulletstorm, Precision Detonation, Windrunner Quiver and Shrapnel Shot (renamed Accuracy by Volume) were rebuilt, alongside broad damage increases.
2 things on this page name abilities the patch changed
These are flagged, not corrected. Rewriting a priority list needs a source this page does not have, so what is shown is where the guide and the patch notes disagree.
- Explosive Shot (rotation) The notes say "Explosive Shot has been redesigned - Fire an explosive shot at your target. Every 1 second for 3 seconds, the target explodes, dealing Fire damage to all enemies within 8 yards. Damage reduced beyond 5 targets. Recasting Explosive Shot incorporates any remaining damage from previous Explosive Shots on your target." Any rotation text written for the previous version no longer describes how the button works.
- Deathblow (talents) The notes say "Deathblow has been updated - Aimed Shot now has a chance to cause your next Aimed Shot to grant the Deathblow effect." The developers' note adds that this is to make it clear when to follow up an Aimed Shot with a Kill Shot or Black Arrow, and that Rapid Fire's 100% chance is unchanged, so the proc condition described in the guide has changed.

Not re-verified for Season 2. This ordering was checked for patch 12.0.7. Patch 12.1 raised max-level player health and creature damage by 25% and deliberately moved power out of cooldowns into steady-state damage, either of which can move secondary weights. Open question: no Season 2 sim source has been checked, so the order below is last season's and is shown unchanged rather than guessed at.
Stat priority and consumables
Item level and effect strength still matter. Use this ordering to break close choices, then re-check it after major gear swaps.
- 1.Weapon Damage
- 2.Agility
- 3.Critical Strike
- 4.Mastery
- 5.Haste
- 6.Versatility
Weapon damage and Agility are foundational. Critical Strike is the best secondary because it compounds with Lethality, Penetrating Shots, Critical Precision, Bulletstorm/Incendiary Ammunition, and Apex Aimed Shot interactions. Mastery follows for Sniper Training damage and range; Haste smooths Focus, Aimed Shot cast time, and cooldowns; Versatility is mostly survival.
Flasks, food, potions, weapon oils, and runes for this build.
Priority order is from patch 12.0.7 and has not been re-derived for 12.1. Individual lines naming an ability that 12.1 removed or redesigned are annotated above; lines that 12.1 only retuned are unchanged, because a damage number moving does not by itself reorder a priority list.
Opener and priority
Use these as decision priorities, not a rigid cast sequence. Re-evaluate whenever targets, resources, procs, or mechanics change.
Core principles
- Spend every Precise Shots proc: every Aimed Shot (and, with talents, Rapid Fire) generates one, and in practice you simply follow every Aimed Shot or Rapid Fire with a spender - Arcane Shot on single target, Multi-Shot on 2+ targets with Trick Shots.
- Use Rapid Fire to generate Bulletstorm, then pour heavily buffed Aimed Shots into that window - Rapid Fire's own damage is secondary in most builds.
- Reserve movement for when you are not casting Aimed Shot: you can move freely between casts without interrupting the rotation, so use those gaps to constantly improve your position instead of standing still.
Dark RangerMakes Black Arrow your primary Precise Shots spender and turns Trueshot's button into a one-use Wailing Arrow.
Single-target priority
- 1.Black Arrow - primary Precise Shots spender - cast immediately after every Aimed Shot and Rapid Fire while a proc is available
- 2.Aimed Shot - if it is about to reach 2 charges; during Trueshot, also if you have a Black Arrow proc but no Precise Shots to spend it with
- 3.Trueshot - ideally right after a Rapid Fire so a fresh Bulletstorm carries into the window - never back-to-back with Volley in either order
- 4.Rapid Fire - on cooldown
- 5.Wailing Arrow - if you do not have a Black Arrow proc
- 6.Arcane Shot - backup Precise Shots spender when Black Arrow is not available
- 7.Volley - on cooldown - it activates Double Tap, so never cast it directly before or after Trueshot
- 8.Aimed Shot
- 9.Explosive Shot
- 10.Steady Shot - filler - fills every empty moment with Focus and Aimed Shot cooldown reduction
AoE priority
- 1.Black Arrow - primary Precise Shots spender after every Aimed Shot and Rapid Fire
- 2.Aimed Shot - if at or about to reach 2 charges, provided Trick Shots is up
- 3.Multi-Shot - backup Precise Shots spender when Black Arrow is unavailable, and to activate Trick Shots whenever it is down
- 4.Trueshot - ideally right after a Rapid Fire - never back-to-back with Volley
- 5.Rapid Fire - on cooldown, provided Trick Shots is up
- 6.Wailing Arrow - if you have no Black Arrow proc
- 7.Volley - on cooldown - never directly before or after Trueshot
- 8.Aimed Shot
- 9.Multi-Shot - with Precise Shots
- 10.Explosive Shot - if talented, which it typically is not in AoE builds
- 11.Steady Shot - filler
Opener
- 1.Ensure Hunter's Mark is on the highest-health target - coordinate marks if there are multiple Hunters.
- 2.Pre-use a cast-time on-use trinket about 4.5 seconds before combat.
- 3.Pre-cast Aimed Shot about 2.5 seconds before combat so it lands as the pull starts.
- 4.Cast Black Arrow, then Aimed Shot.
- 5.Activate Trueshot.
- 6.Cast Black Arrow, Rapid Fire, Black Arrow, Aimed Shot, Arcane Shot.
- 7.Cast Wailing Arrow if you need a Black Arrow proc, then Aimed Shot and continue the normal priority.
- 8.In AoE, open with Black Arrow, trinket, Rapid Fire, Black Arrow, Trueshot, Aimed Shot, Black Arrow, Wailing Arrow (if you need a proc), Volley, Aimed Shot.
SentinelPlays around Volley, Bulletstorm-buffed Aimed Shots, and Moonlight Chakram from Trueshot. With Aspect of the Hydra instead of Trick Shots, use the single-target priority in AoE as well.
Single-target priority
- 1.Volley - on cooldown - on 1 target cast Volley into Rapid Fire before Trueshot when both are up; never directly before or after Trueshot, which wastes Double Tap
- 2.Trueshot - ideally right after a Rapid Fire so a fresh Bulletstorm carries into the window
- 3.Aimed Shot - if it is about to reach 2 charges
- 4.Rapid Fire - if Bulletstorm is down or would expire before your next Aimed Shot, or regardless if the target is below 20% HP
- 5.Kill Shot - preferred Precise Shots spender on single target - skip it on 2+ targets
- 6.Arcane Shot - Precise Shots spender - during Trueshot, only immediately after an Aimed Shot, never as a follow-up to Rapid Fire or Volley
- 7.Moonlight Chakram - if Trueshot has fewer than 3 seconds remaining, to guarantee a Chakram cast inside the window
- 8.Aimed Shot
- 9.Moonlight Chakram - as a filler - never let it lapse
- 10.Rapid Fire
- 11.Explosive Shot
- 12.Steady Shot - filler - Focus and Aimed Shot cooldown reduction
AoE priority
- 1.Multi-Shot - spend the Precise Shots stacks from Aimed Shot and Rapid Fire, and activate Trick Shots whenever it is down
- 2.Rapid Fire - if Bulletstorm is down or would expire before your next Aimed Shot, or if the target is below 20% HP
- 3.Trueshot - never back-to-back with Volley in either order
- 4.Volley - on cooldown
- 5.Explosive Shot - with Shrapnel Shot: outside Trueshot, without a Lock and Load proc, when Aimed Shot has 1 or fewer charges
- 6.Aimed Shot - whenever possible
- 7.Moonlight Chakram - when you have no Aimed Shots remaining or Trueshot is about to run out
- 8.Rapid Fire - with Trick Shots
- 9.Explosive Shot
- 10.Steady Shot - filler
Opener
- 1.Ensure Hunter's Mark is on the highest-health target - coordinate marks if there are multiple Hunters.
- 2.Pre-cast Aimed Shot about 2.5 seconds before combat so it lands as the pull starts.
- 3.Cast Arcane Shot, then Volley.
- 4.Use your on-use trinket, then cast Rapid Fire and Arcane Shot.
- 5.Activate Trueshot.
- 6.Cast Aimed Shot, then Arcane Shot.
- 7.Cast Moonlight Chakram when out of Aimed Shots or at the end of Trueshot, then continue the normal priority.
- 8.In AoE, open with Multi-Shot, trinket, Rapid Fire, Multi-Shot, Trueshot, Aimed Shot, Multi-Shot, Volley, Aimed Shot, Multi-Shot, Moonlight Chakram.
Pre-combat checks
- Drink your flask (Flask of the Shattered Sun).
- Apply Thalassian Phoenix Oil to your weapon.
- Apply Hunter's Mark to your target - if there are multiple Hunters, coordinate which ones you each Mark.
- Eat food, ideally of the Hearty variety so it does not fade on death.
Major cooldowns
Trueshot
- Massively increases critical strike chance, damage, and the cooldown rates of Aimed Shot and Rapid Fire, plus Aimed Shot's cast time - your priorities do not change inside it.
- Activate it right before an Aimed Shot comes up naturally in your rotation; Aimed Shot is the ability you most want the window to amplify.
- Enter the window with a healthy Bulletstorm duration - cast Rapid Fire right before pressing Trueshot.
- Dark Ranger: activating Trueshot also grants a Black Arrow proc, which needs Precise Shots active before it can be fired.
- Both trees: during the window the Trueshot button becomes a one-use ability - Wailing Arrow for Dark Ranger, Moonlight Chakram for Sentinel. Use it as filler where it does not interfere with your other priorities.
On-use trinkets
- Pair stat-granting on-use trinkets with Trueshot.
- Use cast-time trinkets shortly before Trueshot - avoid spending time on them after the window has already been popped, and ideally pair them with Rapid Fire as in the opener.
Advanced tips
Always Be Casting
- Marksmanship always has something to cast: even with every resource and cooldown spent, Steady Shot fills the gap, and within about 2 seconds you are back to casting Aimed Shot.
- Slow button presses, pressing abilities that are not available, and pausing the rotation to handle mechanics all bleed small windows of dead time - those windows add up quickly and are the difference between a good and a great player.
Import strings were built for patch 12.0.7 and have NOT been re-verified for 12.1. Nobody authoritative publishes import strings, so none was rewritten here rather than invented. Patch 12.1 moved or removed talents in several trees, so a string may import a build that no longer exists. Check the listed key talents against the 12.1 changes above before importing.

datamined. Read out of the game's spell data and republished by Wowhead. Blizzard does not publish set bonus text, so there is no first-party version to compare it against.- 2-piece
- Explosive Shot lasts 1.0 sec longer and deals 5% increased damage.
- 4-piece
- Aimed Shot and Rapid Fire damage increased by 5%. Each time Explosive Shot causes a burst of damage, the cooldown of Aimed Shot and Rapid Fire is reduced by 0.5 sec.

Editorial acquisition targets
Use these slot targets when planning drops and crafted pieces. The encounter explorer above remains the source for the exact gear worn by each ranked player.
Season 1 acquisition targets, not re-verified for Season 2. The rows below name Season 1 items at their Season 1 item levels and are accurate as that; they are not Season 2 recommendations. Season 2's raid is The Venomous Abyss (8 bosses, Nek'zali the Soulcoiler through Ula'tek). Confirmed Season 2 raid item levels run 279 (Raid Finder, first boss) to 344 (Mythic, last two bosses and Very Rare drops), with Normal 292-302, Heroic 305-315 and the Great Vault paying 292/305/318/334 by difficulty. Open question: per-slot best-in-slot for Season 2 needs a sim source, and none was reachable.

What improves results
- Use no-channeling macros on Aimed Shot, Arcane Shot, Multi-Shot, and Steady Shot so you do not clip Rapid Fire.
- Precise Shots should be consumed before you overwrite them, but not at the cost of capping Aimed Shot or missing a hero window.
- In AoE, know whether Trick Shots is coming from Multi-Shot, Volley, or Dark Ranger Black Arrow spread.
- Aimed Shot always critting through Apex makes Crit damage scaling extremely important; do not blindly chase Haste because the cast feels slow.
- Plan movement around Aimed Shot casts. Move during instant Precise Shots, Explosive Shot, Black Arrow, Kill Shot, or Steady Shot filler windows.
- Use Misdirection, Binding Shot, Freezing Trap, Tranquilizing Shot, Counter Shot, and Feign Death as assigned utility.
Common mistakes
- Overcapping Focus
- Wasting or overwriting Precise Shots
- Clipping Rapid Fire with another cast
- Using Trueshot with no setup or before Black Arrow / Sentinel timing is ready
- Dropping Trick Shots in AoE
- Hard-casting Aimed Shot at the wrong time and cancelling it to movement
- Sitting on Black Arrow / Kill Shot / Deathblow procs
Talents by enemy class
Pick an opponent to see the pressure your PvP build must answer. The baseline comes from this spec's current arena build when one is published.
Grip setups, anti-caster pressure, and sustained melee uptime.
Mobility, anti-slow, and physical or magic mitigation.
Keep an answer for grip-based isolation and do not spend movement before the Death Knight commits their control chain.
